Minimal Expressionism

For the visual artist Thomas Lindvig, painting is a perpetual project. His works constitute subtle and many-valued hybrids. They bring ideas and stories into play, but at the same time distinguish themselves as minimalist objects within a space – objects that insist on their physical presence, their volume, and their concrete and tactile appearance. Lindvig reclaims existence from the non-existent – that which has not yet been spoken or received language – when he either creates his negative motives in the thickness of the dense and coated aluminium sheets or allows inch high lines of contours rise from the paint material, so that we see lines which curve like arabesques on the surface, thus creating figures. These ‘stories’ often refer to factual, dramatic events that Lindvig picks up from the mass media. They concern violence, death, sex, and other at times very violent events verging on catastrophe, and the imprints of these are then positioned as an edge or a hole in the surface, which is thus – immaculate and untouched by the human hand – infected by the folly of this world.
